If you or your child has undergone orthodontic correction, you want to do everything possible to keep that new smile healthy and straight. RetainerHere at Suter Orthodontics in Colorado Springs, retainers play a significant role in maintaining the wonderful results that have been produced by our orthodontic treatments. Read on to learn more:

Why should orthodontic patients wear retainers?

After completing the final phases of orthodontic treatment, patients here at Suter Orthodontics in Colorado Springs usually wear custom-made wire or acrylic appliances called retainers. As their name implies, retainers retain, or keep, teeth in their newly-aligned and healthier positions by prohibiting orthodontic relapse, or the return of teeth to their previously crooked, gapped, or crowded alignment.

Additionally, some patients need to wear retainers to avoid the pain and wear caused by jaw joint dysfunction (TMJ/TMD) and bruxism (teeth clenching and grinding). In other words, retainers help people feel better and keep tooth structure strong and healthy.

What kinds of retainers are there?

Some are removable and generally made of metal and/or acrylic, while some are bonded to the back of a top/bottom row of teeth and generally made of metal and composite resin. Whatever the materials and positioning may be, expect an appliance that is custom-crafted to be completely comfortable, discreet, and durable!

When will I wear a retainer?

Everyone is different. Some people require permanent retainers. Others do well with removable retainers that are worn day and night for a few months, and then, just at night indefinitely. Dr. Suter will tell you how and when to wear your appliance.

Find out why your child will need to wear their retainer regularly after orthodontic treatment.

It’s an exciting day when your child finally gets their braces off. After all, they now have a straight smile; however, before you start retainercelebrating there is one key fact you shouldn’t forget. Our Colorado Springs, CO, orthodontist Dr. Scott Suter will create a retainer for your child to wear after having their braces removed.

Why does my child need a retainer?

A lot of parents are under the assumption that once braces come off that their child’s smile will just remain straight; however, this isn’t exactly true. The job of braces is to shift your child’s teeth into the proper alignment but once the braces are removed our Colorado Springs orthodontist will then provide your child with a retainer, a removable orthodontic appliance made either from metal or plastic that will prevent teeth from drifting back to where they were prior to getting braces.

Retainers will be custom-made to fit your child’s mouth so that it provides just the perfect amount of pressure to retain your child’s new smile. Before getting a retainer we will discuss the type of retainer we will provide your child, as well as how often they will need to wear it.

Will my child always wear a retainer?

There are many factors that go into deciding just how long your child will need to wear their retainer. It’s important to understand that unlike braces, retainers do not need to be worn all the time in order to preserve your child’s smile. On average, a retainer is usually worn for the next 3-6 months after orthodontic treatment.

Once teeth have begun to stabilize in their new position then your child will only need to wear their retainer at night while asleep. If your child stops wearing their retainer altogether expect their teeth to shift back gradually over time.

Do you have questions about your child’s orthodontic treatment? Is it time to sit down and discuss getting a retainer? If so, then call the dental experts at Suter Orthodontics in Colorado Springs, CO.

How your orthodontist in Colorado Springs can help your smileorthodontic treatment

Having a straight smile is important for many reasons. A straight smile is easier to clean and helps you chew your food better, which aids in your overall health. A straight smile also helps prevent excess stress and wear on your teeth, which will help save you from eroding or breaking your teeth down over time. Of course, a straight smile is also more attractive!

Orthodontics is the answer to a straight smile, and Dr. Scott Suter at Suter Orthodontics in Colorado Springs, CO, wants to share what you should know about the types of orthodontic treatment available.

At Suter Orthodontics you can choose from:

  • Conventional metal brackets and wires which are the least expensive and often the best orthodontic option
  • Ceramic, tooth-colored brackets, and wires which are the most natural-looking orthodontic option

You should consider orthodontic treatment to give you a healthy, beautiful smile you can maintain easily. Orthodontics can correct:

  • Jaw alignment issues like overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite
  • Tooth positioning issues like crowding, rotation, improper placement, or incomplete eruption
  • If you have gaps in between your teeth, or you have teeth that overlap each other, orthodontic treatment is the perfect choice to give you a smile you will love.

What your orthodontist in Colorado Springs wants you to knowbraces

If you have rotated, poorly-aligned teeth, you already know how difficult they are to keep clean. If your jaws don’t align properly, you already know how difficult it is to chew your food. The truth is braces can give you a more beautiful smile. They can also restore full biting function. Dr. Scott Suter at Suter Orthodontics in Colorado Springs, CO wants to share more about the benefits of braces.

If your teeth are crowded closely together, it can be very difficult to floss. Chances are you’ve shredded floss in between your teeth which can be frustrating and can also result in more plaque collecting between your teeth. Increased plaque can result in tooth decay, gum infection, and periodontal disease. Braces will align teeth correctly, making flossing easy. Your teeth will stay much cleaner, reducing the possibility of tooth decay, gum, and periodontal disease.

Poorly-aligned teeth can also cause increased tooth wear, resulting in the need for expensive restorative treatments later on. Properly aligned teeth will help prevent tooth wear and keep your teeth healthy and strong.

Now that you know how braces can help keep your teeth healthy, you need to know how braces can make your smile beautiful. Let’s face it a straight smile is more attractive! If you suffer from an underbite, overbite, crossbite, or open bite, chances are people are noticing your poor bite alignment and not your beautiful smile. Braces will shift your teeth into proper position. Now people will notice you and your beautiful, straight smile!

Am I a candidate for orthodontic care?
Almost anyone who wishes their smile’s appearance was straighter or their mouth’s bite was corrected can benefit from orthodontic care. Dentists recommend braces for teens over the age of 12 and adults. In some cases, children under 12 may begin treatment early to help guide their still-growing jaw into alignment. Some of the most common issues orthodontic care treats include:

  • overcrowding
  • under crowding
  • misalignments
  • uneven teeth
  • overbite
  • crossbite
  • underbite
  • open bite

What kind of braces does Dr. Suter offer?
Suter Orthodontics offers several types of braces, including:

  • Traditional Braces: These are the braces which most people think of when they envision orthodontic care. Colored rubber bands hold metal wires onto brackets placed permanently onto each tooth.
  • Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces work the same way as traditional braces, with brackets on each tooth which hold wires in place. However, rather than being made form noticeable metal, they are made from ceramic, a tooth-colored material which blends easily into your smile.
