February has been a pretty eventful month with much attention being focused on The Super Bowl and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Families across the U.S. have been huddled together these past few weeks to witness athleticism bracesat its best.
Although not everyone is destined to win a gold medal, it’s still fun to get out there and feel like you can. However, sports, especially ones involving body contact, can raise your risk of a mouth injury. If you wear braces, you need to be extra careful.
If you don’t wear a mouth guard, you could accidentally damage your orthodontic appliances. Please watch out for the following braces emergencies:
  • Protruding wire
  • Loose wires, brackets or bands
  • Knocked off bracket
  • Lost wire or wire tie
While these orthodontic issues don’t seem like “emergencies,” you don’t want a loose, broken or protruding wire or bracket to irritate or cut your mouth. If this should happen to you, make your orthodontist aware of the situation, so the problem can be taken care of in an appropriate manner.
